Carlsbad's Coastal Road Has an Ocean Problem. The Fix Weighs Tons.
Erosion near Las Encinas Creek has put part of southbound Carlsbad Boulevard at risk. The city is extending a rock barrier to protect it.

The ocean has been working on the bluff below Carlsbad Boulevard. The city is answering with rocks. Very large rocks.

A stretch of the southbound road just north of the Las Encinas Creek bridge is at risk from erosion. Carlsbad declared a local emergency in September and is extending the rock barrier along the bluff.

If you drive toward North Ponto Beach, this is the area to watch. Construction could mean delays on southbound Carlsbad Boulevard.

Cracks Were the First Warning

City crews spotted cracks along the shoulder and bike lane during a June 25 inspection. They put out cones and warning signs, sealed the cracks and kept an eye on the bluff.

A geotechnical report received September 8 found active erosion. It warned the bluff could become unstable with little notice.

The city declared an emergency the following day. Waiting for another chunk of bluff to move wasn't much of a plan.

A Few More Feet of Very Heavy Rock

Crews are extending the existing rock barrier about 192 feet to the north. It's called a revetment: large rocks stacked along the shoreline to help keep waves from wearing away the bluff.

Each boulder weighs roughly four to eight tons. These aren't the kind you move around because you don't like where the landscaper put them.

The existing barrier already covers about 1,270 feet. State documents allow another 65 feet of extension if site conditions require it.

The work is focused on this one stretch of bluff. It's not a fix for every erosion problem along Carlsbad's coast.

What Drivers and Beachgoers Should Know

The city has warned of possible intermittent southbound lane closures and traffic delays between Palomar Airport Road and Island Way.

There's no fixed closure schedule in the information reviewed. Watch for work-zone signs and give yourself extra time if you're heading through.

Cyclists should pay attention near the shoulder and bike lane. Beachgoers should stay outside any marked construction areas or unstable bluff edges. The view is better from somewhere that isn't crumbling.

The Coastline Doesn't Stop Changing

Carlsbad has put rock protection in this area before, including work in 2009, 2015 and 2016.

This latest extension is meant to keep the road and nearby access safer while the bluff continues to face waves and weather.

If you use this stretch regularly, the practical takeaway is simple: watch for lane changes, slow down near crews and check city notices before heading out.

Questions About Carlsbad's Coastal Road Work

Where is the bluff erosion affecting Carlsbad Boulevard?

On the west side of southbound Carlsbad Boulevard, north of the Las Encinas Creek bridge, near North Ponto Beach.

Why did Carlsbad declare a local emergency?

A geotechnical report identified active bluff erosion that could threaten the roadway and public safety.

What is the city building to protect the road?

An approximately 192-foot northward extension of an existing rock revetment, using boulders weighing about four to eight tons each.

Will Carlsbad Boulevard be closed?

The city has warned of possible intermittent southbound lane closures and traffic impacts. Check current city notices before traveling.

Does this fix all of Carlsbad's coastal erosion?

No. The emergency stabilization is limited to a particular bluff section near the Las Encinas Creek bridge.
